LARS Study: Significant reduction of amputations in
people with diabetes
Diabetes is the main
cause of lower extremity amputations. For the first
time in Germany, we could show a clinically and
statistically significant reduction of amputations
in the population with diabetes. In the city of
Leverkusen (North Rhine Westphalia), on average, amputation rates fell by 3%
per year between 1990 and 2005. No change could be
shown in people without diabetes. This indicates the
success of substantial efforts undertaken in this
city to improve care for people with diabetes.
